چکیده

Purpose: Recently, respiratory-calibrated MRI methods capable of providing a non-invasive, quantitative assessment of cerebral physiology have been developed. Although differing slightly in detail, the aim of these methods is the same: to calibrate the MRI signal using a combination of hyperoxic and hypercapnic gas stimuli, and thereby allow quantification of brain energy metabolism and perfusion. To date, work in this area has focussed on methodological development and consequently data published have been acquired exclusively from healthy young volunteers. In order to move towards using respiratory-calibrated MRI techniques in studies of patient groups, the effect of healthy ageing on the quantifiable parameters must first be investigated. Of particular interest when studying a healthy aged subject group is the greater degree of variability in physiological parameters such as blood pressure (BP), body mass index (BMI) and pulse rate. We applied respiratory-calibrated MRI to a group of healthy aged subjects in order to investigate the effect of potentially altered baseline physiology on the parameters quantified by respiratory-calibrated MRI.

Simultaneous quantitative assessment of cerebral physiology using respiratory-calibrated MRI and near-infrared spectroscopy in healthy adults

BACKGROUND Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and functional MRI (fMRI) are non-invasive techniques used to relate activity in different brain regions to certain tasks. Respiratory calibration of the blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) signal, and combined fNIRS-fMRI approaches have been used to quantify physiological subcomponents giving rise to the BOLD signal. A comparison of abso...

Calibrated functional MRI: mapping the dynamics of oxidative metabolism.

MRI was extended to the measurement of changes in oxidative metabolism in the normal human during functionally induced changes in cellular activity. A noninvasive MRI method that is model-independent calibrates the blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) signal of functional MRI (fMRI) against perfusion-sensitive MRI, using carbon dioxide breathing as a physiological reference standard. This calibr...

The effect of ageing on antioxidant and biochemical changes in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) seeds.

This research was carried out to study the effect of ageing on antioxidant and biochemical changes of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) seeds. The experiment laid out in completely randomized design (CRD) with four replications in Islamic Azad University, Boroujerd Branch, Boroujerd, Iran in 2015. The seeds of wheat (cv Sardari) were harvested at maturity and ageing treatments were done at 43° C wit...

This increasing longevity will inevitably lead to a rise in the number of patients with degenerative dementias such as Alzheimer’s disease, the prevalence of which increases exponentially after the age of 65. In addition to devastating cognitive impairment, these disorders a...

A generalized procedure for calibrated MRI incorporating hyperoxia and hypercapnia.

Calibrated MRI techniques use the changes in cerebral blood flow (CBF) and blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) signal evoked by a respiratory manipulation to extrapolate the total BOLD signal attributable to deoxyhemoglobin at rest (M). This parameter can then be used to estimate changes in the cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen consumption (CMRO(2)) based on task-induced BOLD and CBF signa...
